Bangalore (India) and Newbury (UK), Sept. 30, 2004
Sonata Software Ltd. (Sonata) and Micro Focus International Ltd. today announced a strategic partnership for migrating mainframe-based legacy applications to Microsoft® Windows® technologies. The alliance brings together the industry-leading 'Lift and Shift' migration approach from Micro Focus and Sonata's proven expertise in Microsoft technologies and migration services, to deliver a low-risk, cost-effective migration solution. Both Micro Focus and Sonata are members of the Mainframe Migration Alliance (MMA), a consortium of more than a dozen technology and service providers, aiming to enable effective migration of legacy applications to Windows.
Many businesses with valuable legacy applications running on mainframes are exploring the option of migrating to contemporary platforms like Windows to achieve key business benefits such as lower operational and maintenance costs, enhanced business flexibility and seamless integration with other core business applications. Key concerns for such businesses are mitigating risk and realizing a rapid return on the migration investment.
Micro Focus' 'Lift and Shift' approach offers customers the lowest-risk migration approach by re-using legacy COBOL/ CICS applications to unlock the value within these business applications, while moving them to a modern, open and extensible Windows platform. Sonata's proven legacy migration methodology - eNAbLE© -- helps mainframe customers achieve a cost-effective migration to Windows to accelerate their ROI.
"Our partnerships with leading service providers like Sonata Software complement Micro Focus' strategy to deliver a clear migration-to-Windows solution that dramatically lowers costs while unlocking value," said Ian Archbell, vice president of product management at Micro Focus. "Mainframe customers now have proven choices to take their legacy applications to contemporary platforms without the expense and risk of replacing their entire legacy infrastructure."
B. Ramaswamy, President & MD of Sonata Software, added, "We are excited about this alliance with Micro Focus, and the opportunity to offer mainframe customers a re-platforming solution to Windows, based on Micro Focus' tools. Legacy customers have long been faced with the dilemma of moving to an open, extensible computing platform, and at the same time preserve the COBOL/CICS business logic that they have painstakingly built-up over several decades. The partnership complements our respective capabilities for lowering risk and presents customers with a compelling ROI for migrations."
