The Power of Convergence Driving Business Value: IOT in Mobility

June 17, 2019 7-Minute read

The widespread adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) by Companies, has already had an intense impact on the way enterprises utilize connected devices to change how they conduct business. After all, IoT promises a new level of digitization that will impact how businesses interact with their partners and suppliers and add value to customers. his includes managing and securing a far more extensive network of interconnected devices rather than mere smartphones. It also creates an opportunity for enterprises across the world to reimagine their products and services, collect new types of data, power new front-ends, develop new business models and improve customer experiences. Enterprise mobility is becoming more modern because of IoT, through a mix of mobile devices, wearables, and other connected devices enabling users to be more collaborative.

Gartner forecasts that by 2020, 20 billion connected devices will be used worldwide. So, the task of making real-time sense of the incoming information is daunting. IoT has an increasingly critical role to play in determining the success of an enterprise’s digital transformation journey as such. The biggest barrier to incorporate IoT strategies is that most enterprises do not know how to use this technology and create automated intelligence systems. The massive amounts of data generated by these devices is creating the potential for an entirely new level of integration and usage of data into strategic business decisions. Often, the pure scale and inherent complexities are underestimated when it comes to making efficient and user-friendly enterprise applications, which can be leveraged across all functions of the Company as needed.

The lines have blurred between Internet of Things and Mobility, the two next gen technologies driving changes in businesses across industry verticals. Mobility facilitates improved employee productivity and increased profit because of piggybacking with the increased connectivity of IoT. Additionally, IoT is enabled by enterprise mobility because companies rely on the connected devices These elements optimize process and therefore cause workers to make better strategy decisions. The combination of IoT and enterprise mobility is beneficial for enterprises, as the two complement each other in ways that enable cost-effectiveness and increased revenue.

Apps play a crucial role in a successful adoption of IoT. For each device, there can be multiple apps capable of connecting to multiple back-end systems and devices. This enables a business to be more strategic and efficient, as well as provide opportunities for additional revenue or cost savings. A new generation of development tools and APIs enable apps to streamline business process management and automation. The promise of Mobility and IoT can only be realized if the business value is demonstrated. To reap the rewards of an inter-connected business, enterprises need to use big data analytics to make intelligent decisions.

When dealing with large amounts of data across multiple data sources, using business logic to analyze data and arrive at conclusions isn’t cost effective or practical. The more data sources we connect to collect data for decision making, the harder it is to arrive at best answer. At the end of the day, the objective is for your IoT network or devices to do something thoughtful and useful. IoT complemented by machine learning mimics human thought, finds patterns across disparate data sets, and makes human-like decisions that cannot be achieved using business rules engines. Enterprises planning to invest in IoT need to look beyond simple data collection and analytics. They need to look at how they can consume contextual information from mobile devices, direct data from sensors, and other data from 3rd party sources to make intelligent decisions. At the end of the day, to reassert, the objective is for IoT network or devices to do something thoughtful and useful.

IoT takes enterprise mobility to new levels. Together, they unleash unlimited opportunities for businesses with the ingenuity to consume the insights. Multiple IOT devices connected in managed ecosystems will bring vital data from any location to mission-critical applications.  As a result, employees, partners and customers can gain the critical business information they need for performing their roles successfully. Enterprises will need to develop and manage a host of new mobile apps designed to control these newly connected endpoint devices, ranging from shop-floor sensors to smart eyeglasses used by field technicians. Although automated machine-learning based capabilities may be critical in many IoT discussions, the reality is that human involvement will always play a significant role. The importance of App security is relevant more than ever when IOT and apps which control them, take center stage.

Enterprises need to start thinking about how IoT can fit in with their strategic goals as part of their digital transformation journey. Pairing IoT with mobility can slash downtime, improve safety, increase productivity, improve quality and enhance customer experience. As the Internet of Things (IoT) continue to mature, the focus of IoT initiatives is shifting to the development of pioneering new business models and innovative technology-based products. With strong links to Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and big data analytics, IoT’s influence spans across the entire organization. Though IoT is newer technology, it is symbiotic with enterprise mobility. Both being used in conjunction with each other, opens possibilities for process optimization, employee engagement, and customer satisfaction. The impact of IoT and enterprise mobility technology used together is an influx of innovation and growth, creating a new stage of the mobile revolution.
