SDG 4: Quality Education

Inclusive and equitable education and learning opportunities for all

About 758 million adults in the world cannot read or write, and women amount to two-thirds of this figure. Additionally, 263 million children and young people have never been to schools. The primary cause behind these numbers is poverty, which acts as the forestanding barrier between the underprivileged population and education.

We at Sonata have taken up the challenge to break this cycle and make education accessible to all.

Our Initiatives

Our efforts are aimed at helping people lead fuller and better lives. To achieve this vision, we’ve partnered with organizations that provide education and upskilling for disadvantaged children and women, bringing quality education to every household. Our CSR activities are conducted in educational institutions right from primary and middle schools in rural areas to centers for higher studies such as IISc, RiVER, and IIITB.

Encouraging and Supporting young minds to study computer science - IISc
accordian-1

The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) is renowned for its science and engineering courses. And we funded IISc’s Computer Science and Automation (CSA) Department to encourage the brightest minds and provide them with the best classroom facilities and research challenges. The initiative aims to boost research activities in cutting-edge areas of computer science that are of relevance to both the industry and academia.

Outreach Programs

  • CSA conducts three distinct summer outreach programs for around 125 high school and undergraduate students.
  • Swagatham
This initiative drives some of the best and brightest high school students to consider IISc for their graduate studies.
Result: <Number> of school children benefited till now
  • Summer Internships
Under these programs, students interested in computer sciences are personally mentored by faculty members.
Result: Several students have enrolled in research programs since its initiation.
  • Summer School for Undergraduates
This week-long program aims to explore various topics in mathematics and computer science.
Result: The program has received very positive feedback.
  • Research on Robust Machines
CSA’s faculty and doctoral students conduct cutting-edge research on Machine Learning and Data Analytics, Neuromorphic Computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches for social good, Big Data Engineering, and Testing.
  • Upgrading the Department’s Infrastructure
CSA has the highest number of students in IISc and will soon be upgrading classrooms and the library.
  • The Sonata-CSA partnership encompasses regular interactions between personnel from both organizations in the form of regular campus visits, expert talks, and research dialogues.
Architecting digital transformation with academia - IITB
accordian-2

The International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIITB) was established in 1999 with a unique model of education, research, and industry interaction. It has since grown in stature to become one of the most reputed institutions in India.

We’ve given IIITB a committed funding that focuses on research fellowships and evangelization of technology for digital transformation. We also help the institute conduct workshops and structured courses, framework and course content creation, talks, training sessions, meetups, and more.

Result: Our initiative with IIITB unlocks the potential of platform-based digital
transformation, helping society at large to benefit from the research that IIITB will conduct.

Enabling learning on a digital platform - RiVER
accordian-3

Rishi Valley Institute for Educational Resources (RiVER) is the teacher training and resource development wing of Rishi Valley Rural Education Centre. RiVER has created a unique education kit and pedagogy for elementary education in village schools.

We designed and created a Teacher Collaboration Platform to facilitate communication, collaboration, and content sharing. The responsive platform enables teachers, administrators, and subject matter experts to share best practices and knowledge with each other. It also includes a digital repository of learning materials and a closed-user group for effective collaboration.

Result: The platform has been rolled out in more than 1,300 schools impacting over 22,000 grade 3, 4, and 5 students in Andhra Pradesh.

Imparting technological assistance for hands-on science education in rural schools
accordian-4

Agastya International Foundation is a charitable education trust that runs the world's largest mobile hands-on science education program. These cater to economically disadvantaged children and teachers. With its diverse courses, Agastya has reached over 10 million children and 2,50,000 teachers across 19 states in India.

We support Agastya with two mobile science labs that help their Lab on Road Program. We also offer technology assistance for building the knowledge repository. This is accessible through Agastya’s app-based learning platform called Lab on Tab. This allows rural students to explore science and mathematical experiments with ease.

Empowering women through skills training and capacity building
accordian-5

Kriti Social Initiatives — an Indian not-for-profit organization (Public Charitable Trust) and a social enterprise — was established in August 2009 with a vision to alleviate the poverty of the urban poor. It paves a path for economic independence of women and children in the urban slums of Hyderabad by giving them better quality of life.

Kriti’s areas of focus are:

  • Education of children
  • Empowerment of women

Our partnership with Kriti is an attempt to empower women through skills training and capacity building such as tailoring and basket making. Our collective efforts help women become confident individuals who are equipped to make better choices for themselves and their families.

Helping build lives of the specially abled

Sense International India, also known as Sense India, was established in 1997 as the first national NGO that supports the development of various services and training for deafblind persons and people afflicted with Multi-Sensory Impairment (MSI). To make a difference at a grassroot level, Sense India has set up Regional Learning Centers (RLC) and State Learning Centers (SLC). Karnataka SLC, a Bangalore-based Mathru Education Trust for the Blind (METB) has partnered with us to drive this initiative forward.

We fund the ‘From Isolation to Inclusion’ initiative — a project conducted in and around Bangalore for the deafblind and MSI children. In addition to ensuring center-based/home-based services, the initiative urges various government departments to provide inclusive education, so every child can embrace literacy with equity.

Supporting education of children in forest buffer zones
accordian-7

The Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT) functions in over 110 national parks and sanctuaries across 19 states, covering 72% of 47 tiger reserves and 15.5% of 668 nature reserves. WCT imparts vocational training and employment to the youth in the buffer zones around the forests.

We offered WCT a grant to equip 25 target schools with a tablet preloaded with lesson plans, audio and video material, and class management modules. By leveraging our tech expertise, we’ve created a digital learning platform and collaboration tools that teachers and students of primary and secondary schools can use.

Our digital learning app is in use across 60 schools around Bandipur National Park. We expect to cover more than 600 schools and 40,000 students in 4 states by the end of the year.
